The owner of the Arizona Coyotes has proposed a $1 Billion entertainment district in another state.
Last night, Alex Meruelo, owner of the Arizona Coyotes, proposed a massive $1 Billion entertainment district in the Reno, Nevada region.
The District known as Grand Sierra Resort, would be home to the University of Nevada Basketball teams, but could host Professional hockey events at a reduced capacity of 10,000 in attendance.
However, Meruelo Groups Senior Vice President, Andrew Diss, has made it clear that the Coyotes moving to Reno is not on their current agenda.
"There is no intention to move the Coyotes to Reno at this point"
"Obviously, they're (Coyotes) an NHL team. They need a much bigger venue", Diss said. "There are a lot of rumors about that. But at this point in time, we're not planning on hockey. But we could do preseason tournaments. We would love to have the Coyotes possibly play the Knights up here in preseason. I think there would be a huge demand for that. It would sell out in a day. But as far as having a team play here, we don't have any plans currently".
While a 10,000 capacity arena would not be suitable for an NHL franchise, it could be a back-up plan if the Coyotes are unable to find a new home in Arizona anytime soon.
There are several other suitable relocation options on the table for the Coyotes. Such as Houston, San Diego, Kansas City and Quebec City.
However, for the time being, Meruelo has stated that he has no intention to sell the team.
“Same thing,” Diss said. “If it makes sense down the road, we'll take a look at it. But at this point, we're really focused on the concert piece and the basketball piece.”
Both the NHL and Coyotes organization have publicly made it clear that they intend to keep Professional Hockey in the State of Arizona.
The Coyotes are set for their second full season at Mullett arena in Tempe, while their future in the state of Arizona remains in question as the team searches for a new home.
