Insider Kevin Weekes has just dropped a major hint that multiple blockbuster trades may happen real soon, both involving number one goaltenders in the NHL.
There are several solid teams that are one great goaltender away from being a legitimate contender in this league. Elite number one goaltenders are hard to come by, especially by trade. Teams are usually hesitant with trading goaltenders unless the price is right.
Is a Merzlikins trade brewing?
There are rumors floating around that the Columbus Blue Jackets may be shopping number one goaltender Elvis Merzlikins in the near future.
The 29-year-old goaltender has a 7-8-6 record with a 3.25 GAA and .907 SV% this year with a struggling Columbus team. There are several teams that could use a goaltender of this caliber, such as the Edmonton Oilers.
Elvis has already made it clear that he has not requested a trade, and the Blue Jackets have agreed to find a "new scenario" for him.
You can listen to Merzlikin's interview with the media below:
Amidst the swirling rumors with Merzlikins, another massive name has appeared.
Flames shopping Jacob Markstrom?
Another surprising name that is gaining traction is Jacob Markstrom of the Calgary Flames. Kevin Weekes teased us with a very similar tweet to the one of Elvis Merzlikins previously mentioned.
David Pagnotta reported yesterday that Markstrom could become available for the right price.
To date, (GM Craig Conroy) has not approached Markstrom or his agent Pat Morris about the possibility of waiving his NMC. I'm told that will only happen if the Flames receive an offer they deem acceptable. There is belief out there that Markstrom would consider a trade to a contender, but that has not been confirmed on my end,"
Markstrom could spark interest from multiple teams, including the Oilers, Devils, Leafs and Hurricanes.
The 33-year-old goaltender has a 2.65 GAA and .910 SV% with the Flames in 25 starts in 2023-24.
